DVD Synopsis

Paul Verhoeven's American breakthrough film, Robocop, is an exceedingly violent blend of black comedy, science fiction, and crime thriller. Set in Detroit sometime in the near future, the film is about a policeman (Peter Weller) killed in the line of duty whom the department decides to resurrect as a half-human, half-robot supercop. The RoboCop is indestructible, and within a matter of weeks he has removed crime from the streets of Detroit. However, his human side is tortured by his past, and he wants revenge on the thugs who killed him. The film was later followed by two feature-length sequels and a live-action television series, neither of which were as successful as the original film. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Since being released in 1987, Robocop has spawned several sequels and scores of imitators. However, the original still looms largest in the memories of moviegoers, and this DVD from the Criterion Collection shows why. Presented in a crystal-clear 1.85:1 widescreen transfer, and booming with Dolby Digital 2.0 Sound, the film also contains a great commentary from Paul Verhoeven, co-writer Edward Neumeier, and executive producer John Davidson. The three provide some really interesting information about the making of the film (Neumeier confesses that a bloody boardroom shootout scene was inspired by daydreams he had while sitting in similar corporate meetings). In addition, the film includes nine minutes of additional footage, most of it the extreme violence Verhoeven was forced to trim to avoid an X rating. The =Robocop DVD also features a pair of trailers, storyboard-to-film comparisons, and an interactive essay entitled "Shooting Robocop." Enhanced with concept art and clips from the film, it provides a comprehensive (almost to a fault) look at the entire production of the movie. For fans of Robocop, this is the DVD they've been waiting for. For the uninitiated, here's a great chance to see what all the fuss is about. ~ Jeremy Brown, All Movie Guide
