DVD Synopsis

This action-adventure, that features a terrorist plot from The Fugitive (1993), saw its October 2001 release date moved back four months as a result of real-life terrorist attacks on the United States. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Gordon Brewer, a Los Angeles firefighter who witnesses the deaths of his wife and child, innocent victims of a terrorist attack on a motorcade carrying Colombian dignitaries. Responsibility for the deadly explosion belongs to Claudio "The Wolf" Perrini (Cliff Curtis), a terrorist and rebel in Colombia's decade-long civil war. When times passes with no suspect being brought to justice, Brewer rejects the advice of FBI agent Peter Brandt (Elias Koteas) and travels to the jungles of Colombia to find and take revenge upon his family's murderer himself. Encountering a complex web of death squads, right-wing military officials, guerrillas, terrorists and drug-lords, Brewer is aided in his dangerous quest by an unlikely ally, the beautiful Selena Perrini (Francesca Neri), his quarry's wife. Collateral Damage (2002) co-stars John Leguizamo and John Turturro. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in director Andrew Davis' action thriller Collateral Damage. Presented in its original 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen ratio, this is an excellent-looking transfer that sports almost no defects or imperfections. With solid colors, even black levels, and natural flesh tones, this is a dead-on transfer that should please action fans everywhere. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French. This 5.1 mix is a great example of a tight, bombastic action soundtrack -- with explosions and gunfire rocketing around the viewer, anyone's home theater should get a hearty workout from this rollicking soundtrack. All aspects of the mix are free and clear of any distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Collateral Damage includes a few well-made extra features, starting with a commentary by director Davis. This is an engaging commentary which features the director's multiple thoughts on the production, cast, and story. Six deleted scenes adding up to about eight minutes show what was cut from the final film (and justifiably so). Two featurettes -- "The Hero of a New Era" and "Behind the Scenes" -- are a brief look at some interviews with the cast and crew as well as some footage from the production. Neither of these quick featurettes gives any real depth or meaning to the film. Finally there is a theatrical trailer for the film and a few selected filmographies of the principle cast and crew members. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
