This gang warfare drama is from director Scott Kalvert, whose previous film was the controversial and violent The Basketball Diaries (1995). In the sweltering summer of 1958, Leon (Stephen Dorff) and Bobby (Brad Renfro) are leaders of the Brooklyn street gang known as the Deuces. When their brother Alley Boy died from an overdose, the two toughs vowed to keep narcotics out of their turf, but now they're being muscled by a new and more powerful gang called the Vipers, fueled by drug money and led by mobster Fritzy Zennetti (Matt Dillon). As a vicious gang war heats up that will determine Brooklyn's future, a romance develops between Bobby and Annie (Fairuza Balk), the leader of a girl gang. Gritty gang action meets in the streets in the '50s-based saga Deuces Wild. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, this transfer sports vivid colors and very sharp black levels. While a small amount of edge enhancement is present in a few scenes, overall, this is a very pristine, well-produced transfer of the film. Also available on side B is a full-frame version of the film. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English (as well as Dolby Stereo Surround in French and Spanish). This 5.1 mix features a multitude of directional effects including Stewart Copeland's music score, gunfire, and dizzying effects. Overall this is a clean, through Dolby 5.1 sound mix. Also included on this disc are French, Spanish, and English subtitles. The extra features on =Deuces Wild are fairly slim -- the only supplements available on this disc include a commentary with director Scott Kalvert (which features some production, casting, and behind-the-scenes action stories), as well as an original theatrical trailer for the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
