Jennifer Beals stars as Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel-mill welder by day, and bar dancer by night. Harboring dreams of a career in ballet, she is given financial support in this endeavor by her boss Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri) and moral support by demanding but big-hearted instructor Hanna Long (Lilia Skala). The film's signature scene is, of course, Alex's water-drenched dance audition, largely performed in long shot by her dance double Marine Jahan. Jennifer Beals stars in the 1983 hit dance drama Flashdance. Presented in its original 1.85:1 widescreen transfer with an anamorphic enhancement, the image on this disc looks good, if not great. The colors and black levels are all consistent and solid with only the slightest amount of edge enhancement in the image. Otherwise, this is a passable looking transfer that should please fans. The soundtrack is presented in a newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English. While it's nice to have this soundtrack remastered in 5.1 (the pop songs are a wonder to hear through all of the speakers), overall there is often a jagged feeling in the effects with some being too loud and others appearing too soft. Also included on this disc is a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track in English, a Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track in French, and Spanish and English subtitles. A lack of extra features won't get fans dancing in the streets -- Flashdance is a completely bare bones DVD. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
