DVD Synopsis

A team of "sub-zero heroes" band together to save a human infant in this digitally animated feature from Oscar-winning director Chris Wedge, whose unique lighting software (called "Ray Tracing") sets his visual style apart from earlier CGI efforts. Twenty thousand years ago, the Earth is overrun by freezing temperatures in an Ice Age that is sending all manner of critters scattering in the path of encroaching glaciers. When a lost human infant is discovered, an unlikely quartet of misfits forms to return it to its mother: Manny, a depressed woolly mammoth (Ray Romano); Sid, a fast-talking sloth (John Leguizamo); an acorn-crazed squirrel named Scrat (Wedge); and the devilish saber-toothed tiger named Diego (Denis Leary). Before they can complete their mission, the reluctant compatriots will brave pits of boiling lava, dangerous caverns of ice, and even a traitorous plot within their midst. Ice Age (2002) also features the voices of Jack Black, Jane Krakowski, and Goran Visnjic. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

It's no longer unusual to find a successful family-oriented film go to DVD with a two-disc special edition. Ice Age continues that tradition, and as with many of these recent releases such as Shrek or Monsters, Inc., this title has an impeccable image. Both a 1.85:1 (of course, anamorphic) and full-frame transfer are included on the first disc. As with most computer-generated animation, detail is very sharp and colors are perfectly reproduced. It would be very surprising to find any distracting elements such as grain or scratches, and here there are none. The sound, a 5.1 English Dolby Digital track, is also well constructed. Though not expansive with the surrounds, the front sound is clear and distortion free, coming across with distinct clarity and balance. Not to be outdone by other two-disc sets, Fox has done a fine job with supplemental features as well. The movie disc contains a commentary track from director Chris Wedge and co-director Carlos Saldanha, plus three interactive games and eight DVD-ROM games and activities. The second disc contains the rest of the extras, and they are certainly plentiful. Along with a funny new short film, Scrat's Missing Adventure, is an HBO behind-the-scenes special hosted by Ray Romano, six deleted scenes with or without commentary, a slew of short production featurettes, and three animation studies with multiple angle options. In addition, is a decent, though at times not very detailed, documentary on the making of the film, three Fox promotional spots with Scrat, a number of theatrical teasers and trailers, and a not altogether interesting "commentary" for some specific scenes from Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo). Finally, and a real treat for this disc, is the Oscar-winning animated short, Bunny (produced by the same animation team), rounding out a fine disc that will please adults, children...and anyone in between. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide

This is such a funny, animated movie. It is perfect for kids from 3 to 93! It depicts the central characters on their way to escape the ice age, but are waylaid when they are encumbered by a baby. His mother gives the baby to them before she dies in the ocean. The tiger is an unlikely hero in the story and becomes very lovable.

This is cute for the whole family. The animal characters seem to fit the actors of what I know of them outside the movie.
