DVD Synopsis

Popular bogeymen Jason Voorhees terrorizes a group of nubile astronauts five centuries into the future in this sci-fi update of the Friday the 13th franchise. Early in the 21st century, Jason (actor/stunt man Kane Hoddar, filling the role for a fourth time) is experimented upon by army technocrats who hope to turn his supernatural invulnerability into a military application. Most of them meet a swift and bloody end -- except Rowan (Lexa Doig), a beautiful functionary, who traps the killer in a cryogenic stasis chamber. Unfortunately, she takes a machete blow in the process, gets frozen herself, and wakes up on a spaceship in the year 2455. The earth has long since been rendered uninhabitable, but the survivors include a group of archaeological students headed by Professor Lowe (Jonathan Potts), who hopes to make a quick buck by selling the corpse of the historical serial killer. The kids re-animate Rowan with the help of nanotechnology. Little do they know that a mere thaw job is enough to resuscitate Jason and reawaken his bloodthirst. Soon, the comely students and their space-marine protectors are being dispatched one by one. Help arrives in the form of a holographic chamber and an android named Kay-Em 14 (Lisa Ryder). Soon, though, Jason himself gets an upgrade -- just as the spaceship is getting ready to self-destruct. The tenth installment in the long-running horror series, Jason X was the first new entry to appear in almost a decade. In fact, the previous film, 1993's Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, was one of two installments whose titles erroneously contained the word "final." ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The hockey-masked killer Jason goes cosmic in the tenth installment of the Friday the 13th series, Jason X. New Line has done an excellent job at making sure this 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer looks sharp, detailed, and very well produced. With solid black levels and bright colors throughout, this transfer should please any self-respecting horror film buff. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, DTS Surround, and Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, all in English. Both the Dolby 5.1 and DTS mix are in full bombastic order with multiple uses of directional effects throughout the movie. With nary an ounce of hiss or distortion in the mix, both of these soundtracks are very loud and enveloping. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. Jason X is featured as one of New Line's "Platinum Series" DVDs, and as such sports a vast array of extra features. Starting out the disc is a commentary track with director James Isaac, writer Todd Farmer, and producer Noel Cunningham. This is a grandly entertaining commentary with all kinds of stories about the film's production and lots of tidbits about the character of Jason (played by the imposing Kane Hodder). "The Many Lives of Jason Voorhees" is a half-hour featurette that takes a probing yet humorous eye to the legendary Friday the 13th series. Featuring interviews by film critic Drew McWeeny, film historian David del Valle, B-movie host Joe Bob Briggs and others, this is an exceptionally entertaining piece on the history of the franchise. "By Any Means Necessary: The Making of Jason X" is a nice promotional piece on the making of the film with interviews by the principle cast and crew members. Much of the information from this featurette is covered in the commentary, though this is still a worthwhile treat for fans. Finally there is a theatrical trailer for the film, along with a fun "Jump to a Death" menu. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

One of the more fun entries in the Friday series, this one takes place in the far future. It has a pretty decent cast, most of whom can actually act. Andromeda fans be aware: Two of the female leads are both from that show! They didn't skimp on the gore and made it entertaining at the same time. Far better than Jason vs Freddy, this entry is actually worth seeing more than once, unlike say parts 5-8 (including the bogus Jason Takes Manhattan which has like four minutes of actual NY footage!). While likely not for the squeamish fans of horror and Jason should enjoy this.
