DVD Synopsis

With an insane asylum standing in for everyday society, Milos Forman's 1975 film adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel is a comically sharp indictment of the Establishment urge to conform. Playing crazy to avoid prison work detail, manic free spirit Randle P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) is sent to the state mental hospital for evaluation. There he encounters a motley crew of mostly voluntary inmates, including cowed mama's boy Billy (Brad Dourif) and silent Native American Chief Bromden (Will Sampson), presided over by the icy Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). Ratched and McMurphy recognize that each is the other's worst enemy: an authority figure who equates sanity with correct behavior, and a misfit who is charismatic enough to dismantle the system simply by living as he pleases. McMurphy proceeds to instigate group insurrections large and small, ranging from a restorative basketball game to an unfettered afternoon boat trip and a tragic after-hours party with hookers and booze. Nurse Ratched, however, has the machinery of power on her side to ensure that McMurphy will not defeat her. Still, McMurphy's message to live free or die is ultimately not lost on one inmate, revealing that escape is still possible even from the most oppressive conditions. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The highly acclaimed drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest comes to DVD in a newly produced special edition. This 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer appears to be in great shape, save for a few instances of softness in the picture. Otherwise, Warner has done a very fine job at making sure this image is clear and very detailed. With vibrant colors (especially whites) and solid black levels, this picture should please fans of the Oscar-winning film. The soundtrack is presented in a newly remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track that suits the film well. While certainly not bombastic or overwhelming, this new 5.1 mix features subtle, discreet directional effects as well as crystal-clear dialogue, effects, and music. Also included on this disc is the original Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono soundtrack in French, as well as English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Fans will be thrilled to see this film in a coveted special edition featuring all new supplements. Starting off the disc is a commentary track by director Milos Forman with spliced-in interview segments by producers Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz. This is a very informative track that features loads of information about the production of the film. "The Making of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is a nearly hour-long documentary that sports interviews with actors Danny DeVito, Vincent Schiavelli, Christopher Lloyd, Louise Fletcher, and others. This is a very thorough documentary (though sadly cut down from its 90-minute running time on the laserdisc edition) that takes the viewer through multiple anecdotes and stories about the film's inception. Finally, there are eight deleted scenes in a somewhat rough form (no commentary or explanation for their history is given), a theatrical trailer for the film, and some rather boring cast and crew awards lists. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
