Having spent much of his directorial career emulating Don Siegel and John Ford, Clint Eastwood borrows a page from the catalogue of Sam Fuller in Heartbreak Ridge. Eastwood casts himself as an old-fashioned Marine Corps sergeant who is out of step with the new-fashioned military. He returns to his old outfit as a gunnery sergeant, where he runs afoul of 1980s-style superior officers to whom the words "Gung Ho" are foolish anachronisms. But through his tough tutelage, Eastwood's lackadaisical platoon is whipped into a first-rate fighting machine, favoring teamwork over such New Age gobbledygook as "self-fulfillment." Clint Eastwood stars in the film Heartbreak Ridge. The film is presented in a very nice 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The image for this film looks sharp and very clean with the color patterns and black levels appearing solid and dark. Aside of a small amount of edge enhancement, this transfer should please Eastwood fans everywhere. The soundtrack is presented in both Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono in French. This 5.1 sound mix is a surprising blend of surround sounds and directional effects. While it's not overly bombastic, the dynamic range on this mix is better-than-average. Overall the mix is free and clear of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese subtitles. Sadly, the extra features for Heartbreak Ridge are fairly limited -- all that's included on this disc are some cast and crew highlights and a theatrical trailer for the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
