DVD Synopsis

Paul Verhoeven's American breakthrough film, Robocop, is an exceedingly violent blend of black comedy, science fiction, and crime thriller. Set in Detroit sometime in the near future, the film is about a policeman (Peter Weller) killed in the line of duty whom the department decides to resurrect as a half-human, half-robot supercop. The RoboCop is indestructible, and within a matter of weeks he has removed crime from the streets of Detroit. However, his human side is tortured by his past, and he wants revenge on the thugs who killed him. The film was later followed by two feature-length sequels and a live-action television series, neither of which were as successful as the original film. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Actor Peter Weller straps on his futuristic suit for the role as the armed and law-abiding Robocop. Image has done an only passable job on this classic science fiction film's 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The colors appear detailed and crisp while the black levels look solid with only a hint of grayness in them. A small amount of grain shows up during a few key scenes, though overall, this is a decent enough image that would have benefited from an anamorphic transfer. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital Surround in English. Featuring only directional effects in the center and front speakers, this soundtrack could have been ten times better had Image taken the time to create a new Dolby 5.1 remix (which happened when MGM re-released the film on DVD for a third time). No alternate soundtracks or subtitles are included. Fans of the series will be looking for blood when they find out that this disc doesn't include a single solitary supplement. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
