DVD Synopsis

Mexican-born, New York-based filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón directed this Mexican box-office smash hit about a pair of randy upper-class buddies that sparked some controversy for its frank depiction of drug use and sexual exploration. With their respective girlfriends away in Europe, Julio (Gael García Bernal) and his upper-class friend Tenoch (Diego Luna) are looking forward to a summer full of drink, drugs, and cheap meaningless sex. During a wedding, they meet Luisa (Maribel Verdú) -- the 28-year-old wife of Tenoch's scholarly cousin -- and try to convince her to go on a road trip to Heaven's Mouth, a made-up beach paradise the two claim is on the Oaxacan coast. To their surprise, Luisa -- who is looking to escape her troubled life for a spell -- agrees to go along. Two days into the trip, tension starts to build between the two friends: Luisa has had sex with each, and now both lads are not-so-quietly vying for her affection. Soon simmering jealousies boil over into savage arguments, threatening to completely destroy their friendship. After an enormously successful run in Mexico and Guatemala, this film was screened to much acclaim at the 2001 Venice, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Y Tu Mamá También continues the new renaissance of Mexican natural cinema. The DVD for this title, released in two versions, this unrated version and an R-rated edition, is a decent mix of many different things. To begin with, the image, anamorphic and at 1.85:1, is very realistic. Colors aren't too bold, but also are never washed out or lacking in detail. The earthy tone translates very well to the digital format. The sound, which is a 5.1 Spanish Dolby Digital track, with optional English subtitles, doesn't fare quite as well. Necessary elements such as dialogue are reproduced sufficiently, but there is no use of the surrounds, leaving the sound field a little dull. Extras include an audio commentary with cast members Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, and Andrés Almeida, and while that is a welcome addition, the only problem is they speak Spanish, and there are no subtitles. They certainly seem enthusiastic, but this will leave most viewers in the dark. Also added are the theatrical trailer and a television spot, both never giving the impression it's a Mexican film, and three deleted scenes, altogether only three minutes long. The final supplement is far more interesting: a short film by co-screenwriter Carlos Cuarón, entitled Me la Debes, about the sexual, and secretive, antics of an upper-class Mexican family. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide

In spite of the nominations and awards this movie received, my husband and I did not enjoy it much at all. Perhaps we are out of touch with the mindless wild goings-on of extreme youth, but the most entertaining thing about the movie turned out to be my husband's brief summing up: "Beavis and Butthead meet Emmanuelle" Now *that* was entertaining. Mostly because it was so right on the mark.

Aside from the overdone youthful shenanigans, the movie tries too hard to be "artistic" with little, unrelated, political and philosophical sub-plots injected, seemingly at random, by the narrator. In sum, it ends up being not so much artistic as painfully artsy-fartsy and kind of pretentious.

This one is not a keeper for me.
