A young woman struggles to overcome the provincial attitudes and narrow minds of her home town in this made-for-TV drama based on the novel by
Maeve Binchy. Claire O'Brien (
Siobhan Garahy) was born and raised in Castlebay, a small town along the coast of Ireland where her family runs the local grocery. Claire longs to find a life beyond the tiny tourist community, and she thinks she's found a way out when she earns a scholarship to the University of Dublin with the help of Angela O'Hara (
Geraldine James), a local teacher who doesn't want Claire to turn her back on her dreams as she was forced to do. Claire travels to Dublin with David Power (
Robert Hines), a long-time friend whose father, the local doctor, has sheltered him from the harsher realities of life. In Dublin, Claire and David's friendship grows into a passionate love affair, but their romance has unfortunate consequences that bring the couple back to Castlebay, where their love is regarded with scorn and Claire is now seen as a scheming social climber. As Claire struggles through her new relationship with David, she discovers she's also caught the eye of Gerry Doyle (
Stephen Holland), whose interest in her has become an unwholesome obsession. As Claire's life becomes more complicated, so does Angela's -- her brother, a priest, begins to question his faith, and she finds herself falling for a man with a serious drinking problem.
