DVD Synopsis

Adam Larson and Tony R. Abrams' directorial debut Pumpkin is an unconventional love story. College senior Carolyn McDuffy (Christina Ricci) agrees to coach handicapped athletes from a local town in order to help her sorority win an award. She and her sorority sister Jeanine (Dominique Swain) are put off by the activity. Carolyn's discomfort begins to dissipate after meeting Pumpkin Romanoff (Hank Harris), a young man in a wheelchair who has dreams of competing in the shot put. Slowly, Carolyn falls in love with Pumpkin, sending her into conflict with her boyfriend Kent (Sam Ball), her sisters, and Pumpkin's mother (Brenda Blethyn). This film was screened at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Small films with a complete lack of focus don't often do well at the box office. Such is the case with Pumpkin, starring Christina Ricci. Will the movie find a larger audience on home video? That is questionable here. For the DVD, image quality is quite good, though not excellent. Included are both 1.85:1 (which is anamorphic) and full frame transfers, which do show signs of grain now and then, harming an overall impressive picture. For the most part colors are accurately reproduced and skin tones are right on target. The sound, a 5.1 Dolby Digital track is nothing to get excited about as all sound is centered up front. Surrounds are never utilized but little can really be expected for an independent film of this nature. Is the critical drubbing of this film the reason MGM only gave the disc a theatrical trailer for supplemental features? Other films disliked as much received more extras, but that is obviously not the case with all titles, as this one is certainly evident. Ultimately this disc is as insignificant as the characters within. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide
