Splatter film fans can rejoice with this uncut DVD from Anchor Bay home video. Originally released in a truncated version that easily exposed the film's many inadequacies, this DVD release marks a big improvement considering that the significant gore is its high point. The film is presented letterboxed in a 1.66:1 aspect ratio and is given a clean, crisp transfer that allows the bloodshed to be seen at optimum levels over the course of 17 chapter breaks. One slight complaint is that the picture is so pristine, it is unforgiving to some of
Sergio Stivaletti's obsolete mechanical effects, particularly his
Gremlins-inspired monster that bursts from a possessed youngster's back. The disc comes complete with Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Surround 2.0 audio tracks that keep all of the gut-wrenching action at optimal ear-blowing levels. The commentary track features director
Lamberto Bava, his son
Roy Bava (primarily as a translator for his father), effects guru Stivaletti, and journalist Loris Curci. Unfortunately, what would appear to be a great lineup for this interview-style track actually turns out to be quite boring with the dialogue often interrupted by lengthy silences.
Lamberto Bava gives short, disinterested answers to most of Curci's questions, but Stivaletti is interesting to hear when he discusses his effects work. The disc also includes a trailer and several talent bios. ~ Patrick Legare, All Movie Guide
