Synopsis

The smash success Caddyshack became a prototype for countless other wacky T&A-tinged teen comedies of the early 1980s. At an exclusive country club for WASPish snobs, an ambitious young caddy (Michael O'Keefe) from an overpopulated home eagerly pursues a caddy scholarship in hopes of attending college and, in turn, avoiding a job at the lumber yard. In order to succeed, he must first win the favor of the elitist Judge Smails (Ted Knight), then the caddy golf tournament which the good judge sponsors. Of course, there are love interests as well -- one good, one naughty -- not to mention several foes he must vanquish along the way. The story itself serves to string along a series of slapstick scenes involving an obnoxious nouveau riche land developer (Rodney Dangerfield) who wants to turn the site into a condominium community; an oddball, Zen-quoting, millionaire slacker/golf ace (Chevy Chase); and a psychotic groundskeeper (Bill Murray) with a gopher-fixation. Editorial Review

It's the snobs vs. the slobs in the uproarious comedy Caddyshack. Warner has done a fair job on this new edition of the film, featuring a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Unfortunately, this transfer includes a lot of grain and dirt, as well as a fair amount of digital artifacting. While the colors and flesh tones all look decent and bright, there seems to be a dullness in the image which lacks depth. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono in both English and French. This is a good example of a soundtrack that is very unimpressive, though in the confines of the film, it works fine. Since Caddyshack is not an effects-heavy film, a newly created 5.1 mix wasn't warranted (though it certainly would have been welcome). Also included on this disc are English and French subtitles. Whereas the original Caddyshack DVD only included a trailer, this new "20th Anniversary Edition" features a newly produced retrospective documentary with stars Cindy Morgan, Chevy Chase, producer Jon Peters, director Harold Ramis, and others. This is a very entertaining documentary that includes a bevy of anecdotes and stories about the making of the film. Also included on the disc is some thin production notes as well as a theatrical trailer for the film. While Caddyshack deserves a much more in-depth edition than this, fans will have to be content with this meager offering. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
