DVD Synopsis

Peter Hewitt (Tom and Huck) directed this $30-million family film, an adaptation of Mary Norton's classic children's novels about a miniature family of wee folk, four inches high, living beneath the floorboards of an English cottage. The Borrowers family, so labeled because they "borrow" from the house's kitchen, consist of Pod Clock (Jim Broadbent), mother Homily (Celia Imre), and children Arrietty (13-year-old Flora Newbigin) and Peagreen (Tom Felton). Their adventure begins when they're almost caught in the kitchen by the Lenders, the tenants of the house, so they run for cover. When lawyer-Realtor Ocious P. Potter (John Goodman) discovers the owner of the house has died, he makes plans to evict the Lenders and demolish the building -- a situation where one would want to "neither a Borrower nor a Lender be." Fortunately, young Pete Lender (Bradley Pierce) has become friends with Arrietty -- an alliance leading toward a method of thwarting Potter. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Peter Hewitt directs the 1997 family film The Borrowers. This Polygram DVD is presented with both widescreen and full-screen transfers. The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack is in English, French, and Spanish. Optional English closed captions are also available. I didn't really like this version of The Borrowers. I liked the original British version instead.

This version was trying too hard to be comedic. The family is irritating, the details such as clothes and ways of talking is all messed up, and even the story line is stupid.
This is the movie you get if you want your KIDS to like it, but not if you like the book.

I much prefer the books, and am only waiting for the older British version to make it's way to DVD.

If you order this movie from swapadvd, please be certain you write the sender and specifically ask if this is the John Goodman version or the Eddie Albert version from 1973. I rec'd the Eddie Albert version instead of the John Goodman version which I wanted. Although the upc codes are completely different, this version comes up when entering the other code.

Both versions are very good-- the first one, with Eddie Albert is truer to Mary Norton's book. But, this one is funnier and the kids like it much more.

I've written the Help Desk, but the corrections to the site haven't been made as yet. Personally, I think the sender of the dvd has an obligation to inform the requester that they are sending a different version-- but you never know!
