This Chris Soth screenplay is directed by Dean Semler, the Oscar-winning Dances With Wolves cinematographer who also did cinematography for Waterworld and Last Action Hero. The film's action hero is Howie Long (Broken Arrow), Fox Sports commentator and former NFL star. Wyoming firefighter Jesse Graves (Long) leads a team of smoke-jumpers who parachute into forest fires. Inside a penitentiary, killer Earl Shaye (William Forsythe) devises an escape plan in order to recover a hidden $37 million. He murders a fellow inmate and takes his place in a group of convicts headed out to fight a forest fire. They make an escape, pose as visiting Canadian firefighters, and are ready to look for the loot when retired firefighter Wynt (Scott Glenn) discovers the escape. Shaye's group rescues trapped ornithologist Jennifer (Suzy Amis, Titanic's Lizzy Calvert). Jesse parachutes in, but time is running out, since the original fire and the backfire will soon combine to create a firestorm. Howie Long stars in the raging action film Firestorm. The film is presented in a decent looking 2.35:1 non-anamorphic widescreen transfer. The image quality on this disc sports rich colors and dark black levels, though fans will most likely be disappointed at Fox's decision not to produce an anamorphic edition of this film. The soundtrack is presented in a bombastic Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround mix in English. This is a wonderfully fun audio mix that features effects and explosions through both the front and rear speakers. With a vast array of directional effects and crystal clear dialogue, music and effects, viewers with a home theater system will be thrilled with the way this 5.1 mix sounds. Also included on this disc are Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround soundtracks in French and English, as well as English and Spanish subtitles. Fans may be steamed when they find out that the only extra feature included on this disc is an original theatrical trailer for Firestorm, making this DVD a practically bare bones disc. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
