DVD Synopsis

This gory, scary low-budget shocker from the Roger Corman stable concerns the battle over a salmon cannery in a Pacific Northwest town. Genetically treated salmon escape the plant and are eaten by coelacanths, who mutate into humanoid monsters with giant craniums and sharp claws. The creatures begin attacking teen couples, killing the boys and mating with the girls (in some pretty graphic monster-rape scenes). Eventually, a bunch of them create total pandemonium at the annual salmon festival. Barbara Peeters directs with flair, Rob Bottin's effects are nauseatingly effective, and the cast is good, especially Vic Morrow as a racist fisherman and Doug McClure as the stalwart hero. An uncompromising shockfest with enough gratuitous blood and nudity to keep fans happy, the film features an Alien-inspired shock ending which still makes viewers jump today. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

New Concorde's DVD of Humanoids From the Deep isn't as stellar as the average Anchor Bay genre title DVD, but it offers up a serviceable package for a mid-price disc. The open-matte transfer lacks the cinematic scope of a widescreen transfer, but delivers an image that is a considerable improvement over past video editions of this title. The mono audio track lacks the punch of a good stereo mix, but it delivers the soundtrack in a clear fashion. Extras consist of talent bios, a three-minute interview with Roger Corman, and a handful of fun trailers for other New World productions like Big Bad Mama and Death Race 2000. The package is rounded by an eight-page booklet on the history Roger Corman's productions at New World; it doesn't contain anything fans wouldn't already know, but it is a nice bonus nonetheless. All in all, New Concorde's DVD of Humanoids From the Deep lacks the inspired feature that would have made it above-average, but offers decent value for cult movie fans. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
