DVD Synopsis

Master animation director Hayao Miyazaki follows up on his record-breaking 1997 opus Princess Mononoke with this surreal -Alice in Wonderland-like tale about a lost little girl. The film opens with ten-year-old Chihiro riding along during a family outing as her father races through remote country roads. When they come upon a blocked tunnel, her parents decide to have a look around -- even though Chihiro finds the place very creepy. When they pass through the tunnel, they discover an abandoned amusement park. As Chihiro's bad vibes continue, her parents discover an empty eatery that smells of fresh food. After her mother and father help themselves to some tasty purloined morsels, they turn into giant pigs. Chihiro understandably freaks out and flees. She learns that this very weird place, where all sorts of bizarre gods and monsters reside, is a holiday resort for the supernatural after their exhausting tour of duty in the human world. Soon after befriending a boy named Haku, Chihiro learns the rules of the land: one, she must work , as laziness of any kind is not tolerated; and two, she must take on the new moniker of Sen. If she forgets her real name, Haku tells her, then she will never be permitted to leave. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Buena Vista Home Entertainment spared no expense or extra in the double-disc DVD creation of the animated, Oscar-winning Spirited Away. The remarkable aspect of these special features is how educational they are, providing much insight into this award-winning Japanese film. To begin, Spirited Away is presented in flawless 2.0:1 widescreen, enabling the richness of the animation to explode onscreen. The sound, presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 English and Japanese Surround, is flawless. A French Dolby Digital 2.0 track is also included. The featurette, "The Art of Spirited Away," is a must-see. It offers insight into the interpretation of the quite-symbolic film as well as stories about the trials and tribulations encountered during the translation process. Other extras include a feature on the dubbing process, a lengthy and star-packed Nippon Television documentary special on the film and how its key players worked to create the final product, a storyboard-to-scene comparison and 30 minutes of Japanese trailers for the movie. ~ Kyra Kirkwood, All Movie Guide

This film is not some sort of kid flick (though kids enjoy it), nor is it some corny, sick-sweet Japanimation. This is a fine film that uses beautiful animation to tell a story about a girl who fights for the lives of her parents, while meeting several impossible characters along the way.

This movie will surprise you with its originality and spontaneity. There's adventure at every turn. I wasn't expecting it, myself, but this has turned out to be one of my favorite movies of all time. It's absolutely delightful. You must see it!

One of THE BEST animated films ever. A masterpiece of Miyazaki, perhaps his best film. The animation is amazing, great score, and impressive English dubbing. So imaginative and memorable. I don't get tired of watching this movie.
