DVD Synopsis

John Hughes's third directorial effort, Weird Science, follows in the tradition of his previous teen-centered films, Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith play the wannabe hipster Gary and his nebbish weak-willed best friend, Wyatt, a pair of high-school geeks who are hapless with members of the opposite sex. Using Wyatt's computer, they create what they believe is the ideal woman. A lightning storm brings that woman to life, and she takes the form of Kelly Le Brock. Lisa sets about building their self-confidence, but trouble begins brewing when Wyatt's cruel, military-minded older brother, Chet (Bill Paxton), begins to realize that something is not as it should be. Hughes would finish his cycle of high-school themed films with his next movie, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

A classic from the 1980s is director John Hughes' Frankenstein homage Weird Science. The film is presented in 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen and is in decent shape. While the lack of an anamorphic transfer is disappointing, overall the colors and black levels all appear to be in fine form. Aside a small amount of edge enhancement and dirt in the image, this picture should please fans of the film. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital Surround in English. This mix is very mediocre with only a few directional effects popping up in the front speakers. Otherwise this is a very flat sound mix that sports only the slightest amount of hiss in the mix. No alternate soundtracks or subtitles are included on this disc. Fans of this freakshow will be sorely disappointed to learn that not a single extra feature has been included on this disc. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
