DVD Synopsis
Three years before he became a household name in Hollywood with 1997's L.A. Confidential, Russell Crowe starred in this Australian drama, the directorial debuts of Geoff Burton and Kevin Dowling. Crowe plays Jeff Mitchell, a young gay man and the son of widower Harry Mitchell (Jack Thompson). The two live together while they both search for a special someone with whom to spend their lives. And while Harry is more than comfortable with Jeff's sexuality, his new lady friend isn't, leading to tension and a personal struggle for Harry. Based on the play by screenwriter David Stevens, The Sum of Us was the 1994 recipient of the Austalian Film Institute's Best Adapted Screenplay award. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide
The relationship between a gay son and his straight father is chronicled in this Australian drama adapted from David Steven's play. One aspect of the play that remains is the characters' proclivity for reacting to and addressing the audience directly. Harry Mitchell is a widower living in a small house in Sydney with Jeff, his son. Harry has always accepted the fact that his son is openly gay. The sincerity of his acceptance is questioned when Jeff brings a potential lover home for the night. Harry joins them for a nightcap and makes the man feel quite welcome. He chats until the man flees the house. But Harry is not the only one who does this. Jeff accidently does a similar thing when Harry begins to get involved with Joyce, a divorcee he met through a dating service. She is just healing from her broken marriage and is still fragile. She cannot deal with Jeff's sexuality. She leaves. As a result, Harry suffers a stroke. Jeff now spends all his time caring for his dad. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
