DVD Synopsis

A man finds himself having to decide between one of two women -- not once, but twice -- in this independent drama. In 1993, Coles (Mark Ruffalo) is a film student at Sarah Lawrence where he meets two fellow undergrads, Thea (Kathleen Robertson) and Sam (Maya Stange). Coles and Sam come together and Thea fades out of the picture. In time, Sam tires of Coles' aimlessly hedonistic attitude, and they break up. Ten years later, Coles, after a failed career in feature films, is doing animation for an advertising agency and living with his girlfriend, Claire (Petra Wright); Thea helps run a successful restaurant with her husband, Miles (David Thornton); and Sam, smarting from a bad breakup, returns to New York after several years in London. Coles runs into Sam and discovers he still has strong feelings for her, but has to decide if they're strong enough to break off his relationship with Claire. XX/XY was the first feature film from writer/director Austin Chick. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Though XX/XY is a complex film about sexual relationships, the DVD from MGM doesn't have nearly the same depth. Granted, the image is quite good, but that is sadly its sole strong point. Both the 1.85:1 anamorphic and full-frame transfers are included, and they look remarkably good, though at time the transfer certainly shows the restraints of a lower budget. Colors are nicely reproduced, and while it's a fairly dark motion picture, the black levels are constantly strong. Detail isn't the high point of the visuals, but the lack thereof is never enough of a distraction. The sound, which is only a two-channel surround track, doesn't have much life to it, and occasionally seems to be recorded too low, but dialogue is generally intelligible, which is good enough for this independent film. Where the disc suffers is in regard to supplements. While a commentary from director Austin Chick or a documentary could have enhanced the depth of this film, only the theatrical trailer and a spot for the Showtime series Dead Like Me are included. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide

I love you Mark Ruffalo but "What was that "? A waste of one hour and 31 minutes.
