DVD Synopsis

British writer Guy Ritchie made his feature directorial debut with this crime-caper comedy-drama set in London's East End and heavy on the Cockney dialogue (with one scene in subtitled Cockney rhyming slang). A big-bucks scheme goes awry: Cardsharp Eddy (Nick Moran) and pals Bacon (Jason Statham), Tom (Jason Flemyng), and Soap (Dexter Fletcher) scuffle to pile up enough money to put Eddy at the card table opposite gangland porn lord Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty). Unfortunately, the whole plan backfires, leaving Eddy owing Harry a huge sum, payable within the week. In truth, Harry hopes to acquire the bar run by his rival, J.D. (Sting), who is Eddy's father. To raise the cash, Eddy sets out to steal from a marijuana business run by Winston (Steven Mackintosh), but the inevitable gunplay doesn't make for an easy heist. World premiere at the 1998 Edinburgh Film Festival (Focus on British Cinema). ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Guy Ritchie's witty, cool crime caper explodes from this DVD. The sepia tones of the film are accurately depicted, giving home viewers a quality reproduction of the cinematic experience. The film is a virtual high-contrast marathon, and the DVD consistently conveys the required mood. The sound is crisp, the narrator's voice clear, and the dialogue easy to follow. This is a considerable feat, since the movie is filled with cockney phrases. Anyone still lost among the heavy accents and unfamiliar phraseology can resort to the optional closed captioning. The musical soundtrack remains stunning, with classic songs by James Brown, Dusty Springfield, and other artists -- the DVD providing full hipster impact. The short production featurette doesn't provide great insight. It consists primarily of the actors describing their characters and letting viewers know again and again that the film is very real. Learning that the baddies in the film are true-life criminals is perhaps the deepest information herein. The "Cockney Rhyming Slang" special feature is a slightly amusing list of English words and proper names and their cockney slang translations -- good for five minutes of fun. Short biographies are presented of four of the movie's actors in the "Cast and Filmmakers" feature. Strangely missing are bios of any of the filmmakers, especially Guy Ritchie. The chief importance of this DVD release is that the film's oddball look and dialogue remain intact. It's a punishing, fun experience. ~ Tim DiGravina, All Movie Guide
