Gaspar Noé's Irreversible utilizes the same storytelling technique used by Christopher Nolan in Memento and Harold Pinter in Betrayal. Consisting of about a dozen scenes, all shot in single takes, Irreversible charts a disturbing night in the life of Marcus (Vincent Cassel), but presents the events in reverse chronological order. The audience eventually learns how the beautiful Alex (Cassel's real-life partner Monica Bellucci) is involved. The film opens with a violent altercation at a gay sex club and works backward to explain how and why the violence occurred. The actors improvised the vast majority of the dialogue starting from a four-page story outline. This powerful and controversial drama from France has been given a respectful treatment for its North American DVD release. Irreversible has been transferred to disc in its original widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (letterboxed on convention television sets and enhanced for 16 x 9 playback on widescreen monitors), and the French-language audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1. The disc also features optional subtitles in English and Spanish. Bonus material includes an alternate audio commentary track featuring director Gaspar Noé and several members of the cast; a collection of deleted scenes; a short documentary on the film's special effects; and the original theatrical trailer. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
