DVD Synopsis

Al Pacino stars as Tony Montana, an exiled Cuban criminal who goes to work for Miami drug lord Robert Loggia. Montana rises to the top of Florida's crime chain, appropriating Loggia's cokehead mistress (Michelle Pfeiffer) in the process. Howard Hawks' "X Marks the Spot" motif in depicting the story line's many murders is dispensed with in the 1983 Scarface; instead, we are inundated with blood by the bucketful, especially in the now-infamous buzz saw scene. One carry-over from the original Scarface is Tony Montana's incestuous yearnings for his sister Gina (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). The screenplay for the 1983 Scarface was written by Oliver Stone. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

With the release of the 1998 =Scarface Special Edition, many probably assumed they'd seen the definitive DVD release of Brian De Palma's 1983 cult classic. Then along came this disc, the 20th Anniversary Edition. And while diehard fans will no doubt want to hold on to their copies of the Special Edition for the behind-the-scenes documentary, the technical attributes of this one blow its predecessor away. Presented in a 1.33:1 full-screen transfer that has been formatted to fit a standard television screen (a widescreen anamorphic version was released simultaneously), the film features both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS soundtracks. Additionally, Spanish and French Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks as well as Spanish and French subtitles are also included. And while the aforementioned documentary is nowhere to be seen here, viewers are treated to bonus features that include five new featurettes and 22 minutes of deleted scenes. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide
