The DVD of =Spawn: Director's Cut gives
Mark A.Z. Dippé's adaptation of
Todd McFarlane's dark comic-book epic a lavish presentation that showcases the source material as much as the film itself. The crisp, widescreen, anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 and Stereo Audio put the spotlight on the movie's impressive visual and sound effects, while the commentary by McFarlane and Dippe offers insight into the process of adapting
Spawn into a film and the struggle they had offering New Line a PG-13 cut. About a minute of slightly more graphic footage has been restored to the movie here, though it is not markedly different from the theatrical version. Side B of the disc offers plenty of extra features, such as cast biographies/filmographies, a 200-illustration sketch gallery, storyboard-to-scene comparisons, and additional sketches by McFarlane. A "making of" featurette, the video for
Filter and the
Crystal Method's "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" a brief interview with McFarlane and -- last but not least -- the theatrical trailer complete this thoughtful and comprehensive look at one of the better comic book-inspired movies from the late '90s. Though the double-sided disc format is somewhat annoying, it's a minor drawback for
Spawn fans, who will find a lot to explore and enjoy in this set. ~ Heather Phares, All Movie Guide
