DVD Synopsis

Bruce Dern is ideally cast as Lander, a crazed Vietnam veteran, in Black Sunday. Lander joins terrorists Dahlia (Marthe Keller) and Fasil (Bekim Fehmu) in a plot to create a bloodbath at the annual Super Bowl. Piloting the ubiquitous Goodyear blimp, Lander is to ram the aircraft into the capacity Orange Bowl crowd, then fire thousands of poisoned darts into the fleeing spectators. Israeli military officer Kabakov (Robert Shaw) struggles to thwart Lander's plan before it comes to fruition. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Once again, Paramount has produced a DVD that mixes high technical quality with a paucity of supplements on their edition of Black Sunday. This disc shines in the presentation of its film. The anamorphically-enhanced video transfer gives cinematographer John Alonzo's expansive visuals a near-flawless treatment and the stereo remix of the film's audio elements gives them a new expansiveness and clarity. Unfortunately, the disc falls short in the area of extras. There is nothing to appease the consumer, not even a theatrical trailer. The quality transfer makes this worthwhile for its budget price, but it's disappointing that Paramount can't deliver any extras when rivals like Warner Bros. routinely add trailers, commentaries, and archival short documentaries to similarly-priced releases. In the end, this DVD of Black Sunday deserves praise for its fine transfer of a deserving film, but the complete lack of supplements is a notable letdown in an otherwise solid package. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
