DVD Synopsis

Come celebrate the joy and togetherness of the Hanukkah season with Adam Sandler -- yeah, that Adam Sandler -- in this raucous animated comedy written and produced in collaboration with the noted funnyman. Davey Stone (voice of Adam Sandler) is a twentysomething man with a short temper and a reputation for causing trouble who lives in the small New England town of Dukesberry. Davey has a particularly bad attitude about the holiday season, and on the first night of Hanukkah, he goes on a tear that lands him in front of a judge (voice of Norm Crosby). The judge, who has dealt with Davey before, is prepared to send him to prison, but Whitey (also voiced by Sandler), an eccentric but kindly old man, persuades the judge to give him a chance to turn Davey into a more responsible citizen. Davey doesn't think much of Whitey's charitable nature, but when his trailer home burns down, he's forced to move in with Whitey and his perpetually nervous sister, Eleanore (also voiced by Sandler...spotting a trend here?). Between Whitey and Eleanore's nonstop kvetching and the reappearance of his old girlfriend Jennifer (voice of Jackie Titone), Davey is being driven to distraction by the Hanukkah season, but in time Whitey learns the truth about why Davey has such a problem with the Festival of Lights. Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights also includes eight new songs co-written by Sandler; he duets with bluegrass star Alison Krauss on "Long Ago." ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Adam Sandler's first foray into animated moviemaking gets a deluxe presentation for its release on DVD. Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights has been given two transfers for this release -- one letterboxed in its original widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (which has also been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors), and another pan-and-scanned at the full-frame ratio of 1.33:1. Viewers have a choice of the film's original English-language soundtrack in Dolby Digital 5.1, or a dubbed French track in Dolby Digital Surround; the disc also features optional subtitles in English and French. This edition features a bevy of bonus features, including a commentary track in which the cast and crew discuss the film; a music video for Sandler's "Chanukah Song, Part 3," a look at a day in the life of Meatball, Sandler's dog; an NBA: Love It Live television spot featuring Sandler; an HBO special on the making of the film; a multi-angle animation presentation; several deleted scenes; character profiles; biographies of the voice cast; a featurette on creating the town of Dukesberry for the film; and the movie's theatrical trailers. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This says pg-13 and suitable for teens, but honestly it's more like pg-17 and suitable for late teens, young adults and up. It's got a cute story and would have been a nice family animated movie without the extreme crudeness and language- this is much more crude and the overall acceptability of the language and behavior is much much lower then most of adam sandler movies- most of those I would agree are basically pg-13, even the ones like big daddy or anger management with the adult humor and behavior. This movie is much much worse when it comes to adult humor, language and behavior. It almost seems like they were trying to make up for this being animated and kidsy that way with the over the top adult behavior. We got this and sat down to watch it with my 14 year old kid brother and ended up turning it off shortly in because it just wasn't appropriate for him to be seeing and hearing. My husband and I watched it later and while the story is nice and feel good at the end, it's really a weird mix of adult crudeness in a kidy seeming wrapping.
