DVD Synopsis

Michael Frayn's frantic West End and Broadway farce makes a literal transformation to the screen in Peter Bogdanoch's faithful adaptation, which is transplanted from the London suburbs to Des Moines, Iowa to accommodate the (mostly) American cast. Michael Caine stars as director Lloyd Fellowes, assigned to bring the successful British sex farce "Nothing On" to the boards in America. In an intricate technical rehearsal, Lloyd puts his cast through their paces -- Garry Lejuene (John Ritter), an obliging feature actor; Dotty Otley (Carol Burnett), a fading theatrical star; Frederick Dallas (Christopher Reeve), a handsome leading man who demands to know the motivation behind every scene; Brooke Ashton (Nicollette Sheridan), the sexy leading lady; Belinda Blair (Marilu Henner), the seen-it-all second female lead; and Seldson Mawbray (Denholm Elliot), the inebriated character actor. The technical rehearsal goes off without a hitch, but as the play travels the country in pre-Broadway performances, the eccentricities of the cast come to the fore and the performances in Des Moines and Cleveland are complete disasters. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

A fast-moving farce that will leave theater fans in stitches, Noises Off! offers an all-star cast in some of the actors' finest performances. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image boasts vibrant colors and even skin tones. If the English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix doesn't score strong points in terms of fully realizing its potential, it does recreate the sounds of the theater in a way that will take viewers out of their living room and have them checking for their ticket stub while making a trip to the restroom. It is a movie about a play as the play is working it's way from the Podunk theaters up to Broadway and the hillarity along the way! Michael Caine is brilliant as always. He is the director who narrates the story as you follow the cast from Pittsburg to Miami and finally to Broadway. The relationships that develope and the jealosies that cause rifts create the behind scene and on stage comedy of the Movie. Anyone who has done theater knows when a play is about to begin the lights are called to go up, music and sound effects to start and the call of "Noises Off" meaning no talking is given, then the curtain rises and the play begins. So how do you have a fight when you are not supposed to talk off stage? With big gestures, lots of mistaken understandings and totally hysterical prat falls. Ties axed, shoelaces tied together and falls down stairs on and off the stage. I will never get tired of this movie. And I frequently mutter "Box, box, box...bag, bag, bag.... Sardines... Sardines" because of this movie. Watch it, you will see what I mean. And I dare you not to laugh. I suggest you have tissues handy because you will laugh so hard you will be crying. Even my toughest friend who never laughs or cries was caught chuckling and wiping his eyes.
