DVD Synopsis

Jim Henson ventures into Tolkien territory in his all-Muppet fantasy feature The Dark Crystal. The titular Crystal maintains equilibrium in a mythical kingdom. When the Crystal is broken, the evil Skeksis take over, killing off the good-guy Gelflings and enslaving everyone else. Two of the Gelflings have survived: Jen was raised by the all-knowing Mystics, while Kira grew up amongst the swamp-dwelling Podlings. Jen and Kira join forces to "heal" the precious Dark Crystal and restore order to their world. Adults may find the whole affair a little precious, while children may be disturbed by the film's mortality rate. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Columbia TriStar has created a fine edition of Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal. The video transfer is an anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen presentation and is remarkably clean, with very little scratching or dust. The vibrant colors throughout the Crystal's world retain their depth and brightness. Details, especially of the creatures, are clear, without becoming blurry or soft. On the audio side, Columbia has created a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack, along with a two-channel Dolby Prologic track and a Spanish-language mono track. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is solid, if unspectacular. There is very little use of the surrounds, except by the musical score. Dialogue is clear and the sound effects, such as the chittering of the Garthim, are well rendered. There are several worthy special features. A documentary, "The World of The Dark Crystal," deleted funeral scenes, work print scenes, and the isolated track of the excellent score are all notable. There are also character drawings, trailers, and the ubiquitous talent files and production notes. Kudos go to Columbia for this excellent disc. The film is rendered beautifully. It looks and sounds wonderful, truly showcasing what is probably the pinnacle of Henson's achievements. The presentation, coupled with some excellent extras, make this the definitive edition of The Dark Crystal. ~ Todd Terwilliger, All Movie Guide

Your really going to love this movie and watch it over and over again. Jim Henson has really out done himself with all the great characters in this movie. The graphics are great and I swear every time you watch it,you'll see something new. The story itself deals with a race that has split into two when a piece of their beloved crystal brakes off.The crystal shard was lost long ago,but a young Gelfling is sent on a quest to find the lost shard. The crystal must be healed and the two races united as one once again, before it's to late and darkness is forever!!Now I don't want to tell you to much but there is a lot of adventure and suspense along the quest to find the shard. This Is a must see movie and a real keeper!!!!Enjoy!!!

Excellent movie this one is a keeper. Jim Henson does a wonderful job with the characters. Long ago the dark crystal was broken. A shard was lost. Two races emerged. The last of his kind searches for the shard and heals the crystal. Two races reunite to one being. Not going to tell you much because a lot of adventure along the way.
