DVD Synopsis

A young artist struggling with his career and his muse is getting more than a little aggravation from Cupid in this romantic comedy written and directed by Woody Allen. Jerry Falk (Jason Biggs) is a promising 21-year-old comedy writer living in New York City. While Jerry has talent, he's having a hard time getting his career off the ground, which might have something to do with the fact his agent Harvey (Danny DeVito) is a well-meaning, but ineffectual, blowhard, and his mentor David Dobel (Allen) is an increasingly paranoid eccentric whose twin careers as a teacher and standup comic are both floundering. Poised at the top of Jerry's mountain of anxieties is his relationship with his girlfriend Amanda (Christina Ricci); from the first moment he saw her, Jerry has been in love with her, but Amanda's multiple neuroses, fear of commitment, and frustrating intimacy issues make her all but impossible to be around. Jerry is approaching his breaking point when the small flat he shares with Amanda becomes home to a third roommate -- Amanda's mother Paula (Stockard Channing), who has decided to come to New York to chase her dream of becoming a cabaret singer. Anything Else also features supporting performances from Jimmy Fallon, William Hill, and jazz vocalist Diana Krall. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Woody Allen's romantic comedy Anything Else found the director looking to some young cast members (Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci) to reinvigorate his familiar themes. The film comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Darius Khondji's excellent cinematography comes through gloriously on the small screen thanks to this transfer. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. As with every Woody Allen film to come to DVD thus far, there are minimal extras. Biographies of the cast and the crew, and production notes provide color if not much depth into the process of making the film. This is a fine release from DreamWorks. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

I generally like Woody Allen movies, but this one is a major (as in M.A.J.O.R.) snooze. Imagine a cast of characters as varied as Christina Ricci, Jason Biggs, Danny de Vito, all acting as if they were channeling Woody Allen...! Words, gestures, inflections... everything! It is painful to watch and not rendered any easier by the insipid plot line and the ego-centric, megalomaniacal script. My husband and I just gave up watching it altogether after 30 minutes. We didn't even get as far as seeing Stockard Channing in there.

Can't say I'd recommend this to anyone I care for.

Another fun Woody Allen comedy. Jason Biggs is great playing a character much like Woody. Christina Ricci does a great job of playing the impossible girl friend.
