Fairly conventional as a thriller, this
Denzel Washington vehicle doesn't hide it's clichés, but this disc makes a good movie all the more watchable. While the 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack is not what one would hope for, with most sound centered up front and very insignificant use of the surrounds, the 2.35:1 transfer, anamorphic of course, is exceptional. Color is vibrant and perfectly saturated, while detail is impeccable. Skin tones also stand out as a highlight with this DVD. These are the type of images that is expected, especially for a recent film, from any studio, including MGM, and they have done an extraordinary job. Where this disc falters, particularly as it's labeled a Special Edition, are the supplements. The scene-specific commentary from director
Carl Franklin is its main asset. His affable approach is very easy to listen to, and always informing. Not nearly as interesting is an 11-minute press kit featurette that hardly delves into the production, yet is still worth watching. Three screen tests of
Sanaa Lathan and two from
Dean Cain are also offered, as is the theatrical trailer for this film,
Barbershop, and
AntiTrust, as well as other MGM titles. Rounding things out are two outtakes, some character profiles, and a standard photo gallery. Despite the flaws of the disc and the movie, this is a combination that is certainly worth checking out. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide
