This violent blaxploitation film stars Jim Brown as the owner of a Los Angeles nightclub. When his brother, a Vietnam veteran, is murdered by gangsters, Brown gathers some of his brother's fellow veterans and an assortment of ex-convicts to get brutal revenge. Martin Landau, Luciana Paluzzi, and Jeannie Bell head the cast, along with genre regulars Bruce Glover, Bernie Casey, and Gary Conway. Director Robert Hartford-Davis is best known for horror films like Incense of the Damned and Corruption, while Brown went on to more successful genre fare in Slaughter and Slaughter's Big Rip-Off. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Columbia's edition of Black Gunn is a solid bare-bones edition of this oft-overlooked blaxploitation movie. The best aspect of this disc is its transfer. The film has been given a high-definition remaster that does justice to Richard Kline's excellent, noir-ish photography, which makes stylish use of dark hues and shadows. The video transfer captures this difficult visual palette with great clarity, doing it a justice that TV broadcasts of this film have never done. The audio sticks to the original mono mix; thankfully, this a sharp soundtrack that sounds fairly vibrant and makes effective use of Tony Osborne's punchy musical score. There are no real supplements for the film, but Columbia throws in a set of bonus trailers for some of its recent urban-oriented action films. It's a shame more special features weren't included since this disc isn't priced as cheaply as other studios' catalog titles, but blaxploitation fans will probably be happy to get this lesser-known title in such a nicely remastered form. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
