In Japan, the gangsters wear tattoos. A lot of tattoos. In fact, without their clothes, it almost looks as if they are wearing a particularly tight-fitting, gaudy ensemble. When two brothers who want to quit the gangster life go to work in a mine, they are harassed by the other miners because their tattoos identify them as gangsters. Seijun Suziki is the creator of such Japanese cult hits as Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter. His lesser-known yakuza drama Tattooed Life arrives stateside on DVD courtesy of Home Vision Entertainment. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, the remarkably clean new digital transfer looks great. Colors are solid, skin tones are even, and the print is thankfully devoid of distracting edge enhancement. The Japanese PCM Mono soundtrack is bold and upfront, with no audible hiss or distortion to speak of. Though extra features are at a bare minimum and include only liner notes and a director's filmography, the detailed notes by Ray Pride explore the director's unique perspective as well as possible given such limited space. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
