DVD Synopsis

In this family-friendly comedy drama, Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is a shy and bookish boy just short of his teens whose mother impulsively decides to leave him for the summer with his eccentric grand-uncles, Hub (Robert Duvall) and Garth (Michael Caine). Walter isn't especially happy about being left in the middle of Texas with two old men, while Hub and Garth aren't too pleased to be stuck minding a boy, especially one who isn't accustomed to hunting, fishing, or firearms. When Walter starts hearing local gossip about his uncles' wild and wooly pasts, he begins asking a few questions, and while Hub and Garth don't enjoy having the boy poking into their pasts, as they start telling tales of their youthful adventures, they find themselves itching for some new adventures in their lives. Soon Walter is a semi-willing accomplice as his elderly guardians rediscover the wild, impulsive spirit of youth. Secondhand Lions was produced in part by the well-respected visual effects house Digital Domain, who also helped create the imagery for the film's flashback sequences. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

My husband and I loved watching this movie with our grandchildren. There is one short scene with adult violence against the little boy, which I thought could have been avoided, but other than that the story was great fun for all ages.

Walter is dropped off at his elderly uncles house out in the middle of nowhere while his mom, whose attention he would really like to have, goes off to play with her latest boyfriend. The two old gents, begrudgingly care for the kid but think that they have better things to do with thier time. A relationship begins to grow and Hub begins to wonder if the wild tales of adventure and fortune that the two old guys are telling might not have a modicum of truth in them somewhere. Hub grows and matures in self esteem under the nurture of these two free spirits and they florish in caring for him. A warm depth filled movie along the lines of Big Fish but even better in my estimation. Also a great movie to show foster children. There is love in the world other places besides natural parents.

Funny! Too much swearing (we have a kid, so we prefer none), but really funny.

A great movie!! Everyone I know who has seen it loves it. Some things are just too funny. The images and dialogue make me smile just thinking about them.

This is a REALLY good movie.
It's got a twist in it.
It's sad in some part but in other it's great.
My fav. part is when the old guys go fishing and they shoot the fish out of the water.
For dinner then fish has this huge hole throw it's stomache.
It's soo funny.
I love that part.
Makes me laugh.
