DVD Synopsis

The world's least-employable heavy metal guitarist is entrusted with the minds of upstate New York's best and brightest in this fish-out-of-water comedy. Jack Black plays Dewey Finn, axe-bearer for a fitfully successful bar band determined to win a regional battle-of-the-bands competition. There's only one thing standing in their way: the self-indulgent solos and crowd-diving antics of their "embarrassing" lead guitarist. When his band votes him out in favor of a would-be rock god, Dewey has to make the rent somehow, and after intercepting a call for his substitute-teacher roomie Ned (Mike White), the pot-bellied slacker finds himself in front of a class of elite elementary school students. At a loss for a lesson plan, Dewey takes offense at the pre-teen prodigies' staid musical regimen and makes it his goal to preach them the gospel of The Who, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC -- with the ulterior motive of getting them to compete against his former band for a cash prize. But no matter how willing his pupils, Dewey runs up against the consternation of the school's stern headmistress Principal Mullins (Joan Cusack), the battle-of-the-bands' promoter (Frank Whaley), and not least, his identity-deprived roomie Ned. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Richard Linklater directs Jack Black in the winning comedy School of Rock, which comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, and Dolby Surround. A French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1. Both the audio and visual quality of the disc is solid. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Linklater and Black that is almost as entertaining as the film itself. The two are very comfortable together and actually reveal a great deal about the process of making the movie while making each other and the viewer laugh. A second commentary track has been recorded by a half-dozen of the kids who acted in the movie. They speak glowingly of Black, and it is obvious they had a great time making the film. While their comments may be short on any real information, their happiness and joy is fun to listen to. Other extras include a funny four-minute clip of Jack Black begging Led Zeppelin to allow the filmmakers to use "The Immigrant Song" in the movie (a ploy that was successful), a making-of featurette, and a video diary of the kids in the band attending the film's screening at the Toronto Film Festival. Those with a DVD-ROM drive can access Dewey Finn's history of rock. This is a fine disc for what it is, but the same extras are available on a different, preferable edition that also boasts a widescreen transfer. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

I'm not generally a big Jack Black fan, but this movie is very, very cool! The kids are superb, very talented both musically (they really learned all those songs and played them themselves!) and as actors, and Jack Black isn't bad either. Joan Cusack is awesome, as always. Sooo talented. And the rest of the cast is great too. Sarah Silverman will really make you hate her character's guts. Excellent casting! And the score is the best!

The storyline is truly fun and everyone carries it off in awesome fashion. My husband and I have watched and rewatched this movie more times than we care to admit... :) We both recommend it highly!
