Editorial Review of DVD

Universal Pictures celebrates their history of classic horror films with this special boxed set collection, which offers enough bells and whistles to please nearly any fan. =The Monster Legacy Collection features three two-disc sets, each devoted to a different "golden age" monster character. The =Dracula set includes the original 1931 Dracula, a Spanish-language version shot at the same time, Dracula's Daughter, Son of Dracula, and House of Dracula. The Dracula disc features an introduction from filmmaker Stephen Sommers, a documentary on the making of the film, a commentary track from author David J. Skal, a gallery of promotional artwork, the movie's original trailer, and an optional score written by Philip Glass and performed by the Kronos Quartet. The Spanish-language Dracula features an interview with actress Lupita Tovar Kohner, while the other movies in the =Dracula set include a trailer as their only bonus. Except for the Spanish-language Dracula, all of the films are in English, with optional subtitles in English, Spanish, and French, and the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono, while the images have been transferred in the original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The =Frankenstein set features the movies Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, The Ghost of Frankenstein, and House of Frankenstein. The House of Frankenstein disc includes another introduction from Sommers, a look at the Universal Frankenstein cycle, a making-of short on The Bride of Frankenstein, and additional archival material. Frankenstein features an audio commentary from Rudy Behlmer, while The Bride of Frankenstein includes one from Scott MacQueen. Except for Son of Frankenstein, all of the movies include a theatrical trailer, and like the Dracula cycle, all of the films have been transferred in the full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, with English-language audio in Dolby Digital Mono and optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish. And finally, the =Wolf Man set features four feature films: The Wolf Man, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, She-Wolf of London, and The Werewolf of London. The Wolf Man features yet another introduction from Sommers, and a commentary track from Tom Weaver. The Werewolf of London is paired with a short documentary on lycanthrope lore, and the other films are matched up with their original trailers. Once again, all four movies are in English, with audio in Dolby Digital Mono, and feature optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish, while the images are transferred in the full-frame ratio of 1.33:1. Lastly, the set is topped off with three specially created hand-painted busts of Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Wolf Man made for this package by Sideshow Collectables. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
