DVD Synopsis

Director Peter Weir's first turn behind the camera since 1998's critically acclaimed The Truman Show, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is based on two Napoleanic War-era adventure novels in author Patrick O'Brian's -Aubrey/Maturin series, -Master and Commander and -The Far Side of the World. Russell Crowe stars as Captain Jack Aubrey, a high-seas adventurer who maintains a strong bond with ship-surgeon Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany). After conquering much of Europe already, Napoleon's forces have set their sights on taking Britain, so Aubrey and the crew of his ship, the HMS Surprise, take to the Pacific to intercept any attacking ships from the French fleet. When Aubrey eyes a renegade French super-frigate, the Surprise pursues, leading to an adrenaline-charged chase through the distant reaches of the sea. Edward Woodall, James D'Arcy, and Lee Ingleby also star as members of the Surprise's crew. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Director Peter Weir's high-seas adventure Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World stars Russell Crowe as Captain Jack Aubrey. Along with his loyal crew, Aubrey engages in a grand game of cat-and-mouse with a renegade French frigate from Napoleon's army. Adapted from the series of novels by Patrick O'Brian, the film is presented on DVD in full-screen with a wealth of audio options. Not only can viewers choose either DTS 5.1 Surround Sound or Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound versions of the original English soundtrack, there are also Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks dubbed in French and Spanish. Along with English and Spanish subtitles, the disc is rounded out by a handful of theatrical trailers. Fans interested in additional supplemental features should check out the two-disc edition that was released simultaneously with this disc. dont understand why this was underrated...nice and slow, like a trip in a sail ship. Great episode on the island, could have been Darwin!!!

The movie is sad and was hard for me to understand.
I got bored and left, when I was only 20 minutes into the movie.
But if you like stories about the sea it's for you.
I would much rather watch a action drama movie.

If you like sea stories, or naval combat type movies you will enjoy this one.
Parents should know that it is quite graphic. If you get sick at the sight of blood this movie isn't for you.

It is fascinating, though, because they portray what naval combat really looked like. We get so used to the Disney version of cannon fire you forget what it really meant. When a cannon hit a mast splinters went EVERYWHERE and that is what would really get you.

Some of the strategies the Captain uses to get himself out of trouble are quite entertaining (such as building a "ship" as a decoy)

And there are some comic relief situations.

My Favorite LINE:
Regarding two weevils (little bugs) the Captain asked the doctor which he would choose if he had to choose one. The Doctor can't decide since "they look the same"
To which the Captain replies:
"Do you not know that in the service... one must always choose the lesser of two weevils."

Makes me laugh every time! :)
