Robin Williams's dizzying and hilarious voicing of the Genie is the main attraction of Aladdin, the third in the series of modern Disney animated movies that began with 1989's The Little Mermaid and heralded a new age for the genre. After a sultan (Douglas Seale) gives his daughter, Jasmine (Linda Larkin), three days to find a husband, she escapes the palace and encounters the street-savvy urchin Aladdin (Scott Weinger), who charms his way into her heart. While the sultan's Vizier, Jafar (Jonathan Freeman), weaves a spell so that he may marry Jasmine and become sultan himself, Aladdin discovers the Genie's lamp in a cave, rubs it, and sets the mystical entity free, leading the Genie to pledge his undying loyalty to the dazzled youth. Aladdin begins his quest to defeat Jafar and win the hand of the princess, with the Genie's help. Monsters, Disney's trademark talking animals, and a flying carpet all figure into the ensuing adventures, but Williams' Genie, who can change into anything or anybody, steals the show as he launches into one crazed monologue after another, impersonating figures from Ed Sullivan to Elvis Presley. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

One of the films that reestablished the Disney animation studio as a force to be reckoned with, Aladdin has been afforded a lavish presentation for this special DVD edition. Aladdin had been given a letterboxed transfer to disc in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.66:1, which is also enhanced for anamorphic play on 16 x 9 monitors. The THX-approved audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1; in addition to the original English-language soundtrack and dubbed versions in French and Spanish, an second English soundtrack has been mixed that is specially enhanced for playback on home-theater systems. Optional English-language subtitles are also included. A wealth of bonus features have been added to this release, including four songs written for the film that weren't included in the original version; one, "Proud of Your Boy", also appears in a new music video created for this set, sung by Clay Aiken, while the classic "A Whole New World" also gets a new video, starring Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey. Making-of documentaries on the new videos also appear. Two deleted scenes from the film have also been restored, and a series of "pop-up" trivia facts can be accessed for onscreen play during the movie. Two commentary tracks were recorded for this release, one featuring the film's creative team and the other featuring the principle animators. Short features on the making of the film, songwriter Alan Menken, and the art created for the movie are also on board, as well as the original trailer and promotional artwork. This collector's edition also contains character portraits signed by the original animators, a book about the film's production, and a frame from the film. Trailers for a handful of other Disney releases round out the package, and five games created for this set add the final trimmings to a outstanding presentation of an outstanding film. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
