Editorial Review of DVD

The underrated fantasy epic Wizards makes a stellar bow to DVD thanks to 20th Century Fox Home Video and petitioning fans everywhere. With an incredible transfer that impresses even the director, the film has been given a top-notch treatment that should please those who've been waiting for this cult classic to get its just due. Its vibrant 1.85:1 picture radiates off the screen in a way not seen since the release, while the Dolby Digital Stereo and Mono tracks are admirable in their quality and definition. This release also hits a home run on the bonus materials, starting with a commentary track from the elusive animation rebel himself, Ralph Bakshi. Coupled with the 40-minute "Wizard of Animation" interview, this commentary gives the viewer a rare glimpse into the mind of the pioneering independent filmmaker who defied Disney and built his own studio, only to see it crumble with the rise of corporate greed in Hollywood. Full of wit and stories galore, both the track and the interview find the now 60-year-old humbled by the industry's failings and loss of mostly all of his creative team who were integral to his major endeavors. With ample time given to everyone on his small art staff, whether it be detailing which sequences each person animated in the film or their prior jobs in the field, the DVD soon becomes a rallying cry for the skill and heart that has now all but left animation. As a plus, two original theatrical trailers have been included, along with a TV spot. If that weren't enough, a still gallery packed with character sketches, lobby cards, and fully painted backgrounds is archived here on the disc. With that touch, 20th Century Fox has officially created a classic disc which does wonderful justice to an ambitious animated family film that just never got the attention it deserved, until now. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

I'm a big fan of Ralph Bakshi, the man who stood forth and snatched animation from the clutches of kiddom. You may know him best for creating the first X-rated cartoon film "Fritz the Cat," or maybe even the animated "Lord of the Rings," but most likely from his failure, "Cool World." One of Bakshi's gems is a sci-fi fantasy called "Wizards," a story about two wizard brothers, who battle each other in the far distant future.

On a post-apocalyptic Earth, the world now consists mostly of elves, fairies, and mutants. The evil wizard Blackwolf, seeks to control the world with his army of mutants by digging up Nazi propaganda and simulating the works of Adolf Hitler. He sends out a band of Bounty Hunters, led by the assassin robot Necron 99, to wipe out all the wizards or users of technology of any kind...people that could stand in his way of world domination.

Meanwhile, the good wizard Avatar, is a down-to-earth, Peter Falk-like guy who is madly in love with the young fairy princess, Elinore. After Necron 99 tries to assassinate Avatar (obviously failing), Avatar knows that he most confront his evil brother as he did many years ago, this time to the death. Avatar, along with Elinore, a noble elf named Weehawk, and a reprogrammed Necron 99 now named "Peace," travel to put an end to this war his brother created.

"Wizards," like most of Bakshi's work, is a very avant-garde film. It's smart, strange, funny, violent and quite remarkable. Definitely worth a look...it's unlike any fantasy you've ever witnessed...unless of course you're familiar with Bakshi's work and even then, it's one of his better efforts. Look for Mark Hamill's voice, he portrays a fairy named Sean (very brief, he gets shot right away).
