DVD Synopsis

The Swede (Marlon Brando), a prison warden, rules his family and his prison with an iron hand in one of the coldest parts of North Dakota. When an inmate dies under mysterious circumstances, however, the FBI sends in agent Karen Polarski (Mira Sorvino) to investigate. On the home front, the sons-in-law of the Swede, Larry (Thomas Haden Church) and Bud (Charlie Sheen) accidentally discover that a train loaded with millions of dollars of unmarked currency slated to be destroyed will soon be passing through. The temptation is too great and the guys hatch a scheme to rob the train. Of course, the biggest obstacle in their way is the Swede. ~ All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The quality of Sterling's Millennium Series discs generally rival any major studio title. As for =Free Money, picture quality is outstanding. The image is framed at 1.85:1, but does not use an anamorphic transfer. There are a lot of colors that come off very well on this disc, in particular green, which is used for a nice effect. The colors are true and never show any sign of bleeding. Brief shots in black-and-white look wonderful. The sound, a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, is good though far from perfect. At times there is some good separation to the back surround speakers, but all too often it's a missed opportunity. Still, dialogue is clear with no real distraction. This disc also has a Dolby Digital 4.0 track and Spanish subtitles. This disc has quite a few nice additional features, though most aren't very significant. The highlight would have to be the audio commentary track, this time from director Yves Simoneau and executive producer Joseph Brutsman. It's scene-specific and filled with wonderful anecdotes about making the film. Truth be told, it's far better than the movie itself. The disc also has a very brief and rather useless photo gallery that doesn't have any behind-the-scenes pictures. On the plus side, there is a virtual plethora of trailers from other Millennium titles. There is a trivia game and some DVD-ROM material. Not too bad, but it would have been nice to see a documentary and maybe a commentary track from some of the actors (imagine one from Brando!). ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide
