DVD Synopsis

Model-turned-actress Charlize Theron leaves her glamorous image behind for this gritty drama, in which she plays a disturbed prostitute who becomes a serial killer. Aileen Wuornos (Theron) was a woman who survived a brutal and abusive childhood in Michigan to become a thick-skinned but emotionally damaged adult. Homeless most of her life, Wuornos subsisted by working as a street prostitute; later, when she was in Florida, down to her last five dollars and pondering suicide, she stopped into a bar for a beer. There, Aileen met Selby Wall (Christina Ricci), a woman in her early twenties who had been sent to live with relatives after her Christian parents became aware of her lesbian lifestyle. Selby is immediately attracted to Aileen, and while Aileen tells Selby she's never been in a lesbian relationship, she soon finds herself equally infatuated with her. Selby runs away from her family and moves into a cheap hotel with Aileen, who initially pays the bills by hooking. However, as their money runs low and Aileen finds herself unable to land a regular job, tensions mount between the two. One night, after a john attacks her, Aileen pulls a gun and kills the man. Although her first murder can be categorized as self-defense, Aileen's loathing for the men who pay her for sex becomes so extreme that she begins killing her customers regardless of their behavior. Meanwhile, Selby slowly becomes aware of the full extent of her lover's instability and the bloody consequences of her actions. Monster was inspired by the true story of Aileen Wuornos, whose life and death was chronicled in two documentaries by filmmaker Nick Broomfield, Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer, and Aileen: The Life and Death of a Serial Killer. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The film that saw bombshell Charlize Theron transform herself into a homely prostitute and later walk away with a Best Actress Academy Award, Monster tells the true story of Aileen Wuornos, a woman who faces rejection from mainstream society after a life of abuse, hard-living, and street-walking, leading her to go on a murderous rampage with her lesbian lover (Christina Ricci) in tow. The debut film from director Patty Jenkins comes to DVD in widescreen. The original English soundtrack has been mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and is complimented by optional English subtitles. Along with the film, the disc includes an interview with Jenkins and composer BT as well as a making-of featurette that gives viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the production process. The package is rounded out by a television ad spot for the film. Monster is also available in a two-pack with Aileen: The Life and Death of a Serial Killer, a documentary about Wuornos from filmmaker Nick Broomfield. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Well, if you're into Charlize Theron movies... brace yourself. This isn't Charlize at her prettiest. But, by golly, it sure is Charlize at her glorious best, when it comes to acting. She did not get all those awards and nominations (mostly awards)for this movie for nothing.

The normally gorgeous and sweet Charlize has transformed herself for this movie into a hard-drinking, chain smoking, street-wise, cynical, butch prostitute who gives the word 'dysfunctional' a whole new meaning. She pretty much literally "becomes" Aileen Wuornos. I have seen Aileen Wuornos interviewed and believe me, they could be twins. She even has her speech pattern down pat. And, I read somewhere that she plucked her eyebrows out (completely!) just to enhance the facial resemblance to Wuornos.

This is not a 'fun' movie to watch, but if you appreciate gazing at true talent and gutsiness, this should definitely be at the top of your list! It is beautifully done!!!
