Thanks to the Anchor Bay folks, the 1981
Clint Howard Carrie rip-off Satanist flick
Evilspeak comes home to DVD for the first time in all its decapitated uncut glory. Cut from newly discovered sources, the good old red stuff has been added back into the cut, restoring slightly more bloody footage of the devil hogs feasting, along with a graphic moment of heart-ripping for all you horror lovers out there. The film's anamorphic 1.77:1 widescreen picture looks great, and even though it's only a Dolby Digital Mono sound option, it does well with what it can. Extra-wise, you get a commentary by none other than
Ron's brother himself, joined by writer/producer/director
Eric Weston. Of course, any track is automatically the tops when it has
Clint Howard in it, but what's with Weston's voice on the track? Definitely one of the most obvious conference-call commentaries in a while, the director actually sounds like a robot talking through a coffee can. That said, it's still a fun track -- just weird. Additionally, the theatrical trailer is packed with enough evil
Richard Moll action to warrant at least ten viewings, while the so-thorough-it's-sick poster and stills gallery is a fine archive from around the world. This is definitely a release that the horror community has waited a long time for and they can thank Anchor Bay for delivering. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
