The little seen but highly explosive French actioner Nid de Guêpes (retitled here as
The Nest) finally blasts its way to American shores from the fine folks at Lions Gate Home Entertainment. Previously available on DVD overseas, this release marks the U.S. debut of this hard-as-nails
Assault on Precinct 13 reimagining that took the international action-movie crowd by storm. Packaged here with little to no extras, the film itself is obviously the main attraction on the disc. Thankfully, Lions Gate was nice enough to not only present the uncut and untainted by "hip" Western music international theatrical release, but the venerable company also managed to squeeze in the original foreign-language track as well as an additional English-dubbed audio option (something from which the boys at Miramax could definitely learn). Both languages have been given their own 5.1 and 2.0 tracks, with only the highest transfer imaginable. With bullets ricocheting left and right, your surround sound system will have no trouble putting you in the midst of arguably the best and most intense action sequences outside of Asian cinema since the days of
Die Hard. The dubbing, as would be expected, is not too great, so it's worth pointing out to those who choose that route that the film is already half in English to begin with -- never mind that the dialogue is almost slim to none already, so it's recommended that you stick with the French track. The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen picture is superb in quality, continuing the fine presentation of the film. While no official trailer has been included, if you click on the Lions Gate logo on the main screen, you'll get a U.S. DVD trailer for the film along with others like
Girl With a Pearl Earring and
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. For those that missed out on its limited theatrical run or non-Region-free customers who never had the chance to grab the import before, now has never been a better time to cozy up to this edge-of-your-seat thrill ride. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
