DVD Synopsis

A peaceful Midwestern city attempts to recover after it is destroyed by a nuclear missile strike in this powerful and deeply disturbing testament to the folly of pro-military hawks who believed that annihilation was a justifiable means of attaining power and control. The Day After originally aired on network television. At the end of the broadcast, many stations offered teams of counselors staffing 800 telephone numbers to help distraught viewers calm down. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

One of the most harrowing cinematic studies in the effect of nuclear war on the human race, The Day After comes to DVD courtesy of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Home Entertainment. Presented as originally aired in 1.33:1 full-frame, the image is near flawless. Color balance is even, skin tones accurate, and there appears to be little if any evidence of edge enhancement or digital artifacting. A solid English Dolby Digital Mono audio mix rounds the disc out nicely, remaining free of distortion or hiss throughout. The fact that The Day After was one of the most controversial telefilms ever produced (during the original airing there were no commercials following the nuclear attack sequence) makes the absence of extra features something of a curiosity; it certainly would have been interesting had MGM seen fit to include the televised discussion between Dr. Carl Sagan and William F. Buckley that followed the original airing. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

This was fairly well done for its day. I'd love to see a remake with newer science, better special effects, and less time spent on character development before the bombs drop. How would we survive without computers? If anything, it would have been easier to survive in a post-apocalyptic world back in the 80s than it would be today. Thought provoking movie and the hairdos were great!

Awesome special effects of the day after many nuclear bombs hit the state of Kansas. The statement at the end of the movie even says that the movie doesn't even show the most horrific results of what would actually happen. The special effects on the human bodies were gruesome , but totally realistic. Great guy film!
