DVD Synopsis

The inner-workings of a corrupt Las Vegas casino are exposed in Martin Scorsese's story of crime and punishment. The film chronicles the lives and times of three characters: "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro), a bookmaking wizard; Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), a Mafia underboss and longtime best friend to Ace; and Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone, in a role she was born to play), a leggy ex-prostitute with a fondness for jewelry and a penchant for playing the field. Ace plays by the rules (albeit Vegas rules, which, as he reminds the audience in voiceover, would make him a criminal in any other state), while Nicky and Ginger lie, cheat, and steal their respective ways to the top. The film's first hour and a half details their rise to power, while the second half follows their downfall as the FBI, corrupt government officials, and angry mob bosses pick apart their Camelot piece by piece. ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Martin Scorsese's follow-up gangster film to GoodFellas is a powerful piece of filmmaking, but its DVD release is weak on extras. There is nothing out of the ordinary here, just the usual theatrical trailer, cast and crew bio, and simplistic production notes. Also, though the film runs three hours, there are only 16 chapters to choose from, so viewers should prepare to hunt for their favorite scenes for quite a while. The transfer isn't new, but it's not bad. With a 2:35 anamorphic widescreen ratio, and sound in Dolby digital or 5:1 surround, it's the best thing on the disc. Even the language and subtitle options are limited, offering only English, Spanish, and French. Avid DVD viewers know that it's rare to find Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) doing actual commentary, and since this film isn't one of his best, it's understandable that he chose not to do commentary here. He always delivers fascinating interviews though, and the disc would have benefited from a featurette. Only obsessed fans of Robert DeNiro and Scorsese will want this disc; the rest will wait for this film to appear in a Scorsese box set one day. ~ Arthur Borman, All Movie Guide
