DVD Synopsis

Teenaged Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a legend in his own time thanks to his uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last grand duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, "borrows" a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day bacchanal through the streets of Chicago. Dogging Ferris' trail at every turn is high-school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch Bueller in the act of class-cutting. Writer/director John Hughes once again tries to wed satire, slapstick, and social commentary, as Ferris Bueller's Day Off starts like a house afire and goes on to make "serious" points about status-seeking and casual parental cruelties. It brightens up considerably in the last few moments, when Ferris' tattletale sister (Jennifer Grey) decides to align herself with her merry prankster sibling. A huge moneymaker, Ferris Bueller's Day Off eventually spawned a TV sitcom. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

One of the perennial teenage films of the 1980s, Ferris Bueller's Day Off inspired dozens of films, made stars out of Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, and Ben Stein, and even influenced a rock band (Save Ferris). Besides The Breakfast Club, John Hughes will undoubtedly be remembered for this classic piece of filmmaking. That's why the commentary with writer/director John Hughes on the disc makes it so appealing. Hughes is incredibly informative and insightful and gives away every casting secret anyone ever had about the making of the film. He's one of the more articulate directors to do commentary of a film. The downside to this disc, unfortunately, is that it is not a new film transfer. Sporadic dirt can be seen in the widescreen frames, though it's not too offensive and won't detract from viewing pleasure. The audio is excellent -- offered in Dolby Surround, 5.1 Surround, and French-language. There are also English subtitles for the hearing impaired. The most glaring omission on this disc is the lack of a theatrical trailer, which seems like a standard extra. Overall, however, the commentary more than makes up for any weaker aspects of the disc. ~ Arthur Borman, All Movie Guide

Great comedy with great performances all around, a true classic.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a classic for a reason.
While I usually enjoy movies with deep, thoughtful plots, Ferris still tops my list of favorite of movies. It's an incredibly fun movie, but at no point is it really shallow or a throw-away movie as so many "fun" movies tend to be.
I wouldn't recommend this movie for children. While the language is overall pretty mild, I just think many of the dilemmas and feelings in the movie would go over a younger child's head completely. It isn't really a movie for kids, it's a movie for older teens (it deals a lot with the character's impending graduation from high school and what lies beyond) and adults.
Best of all, no matter how many decades go by, this movie never really becomes dated. The clothes and hairstyles may make us a cringe (though they're quite toned-down when you consider how bad it could have been), but the plot, the characters, and everything that happens in the movie is completely timeless.
Watch this movie whenever you want to smile!

A classic! If you have a funny bone in your body you will love this movie. Skipping school was never this fun, but we can all dream. Jennifer Gray (Dirty Dancing) makes the perfect sister, keep your eye on her.
