DVD Synopsis

The second feature from director Michel Gondry (Human Nature) finds the filmmaker reteaming with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman for this off-the-wall romantic comedy. Jim Carrey stars as Joel Barish, a man who is informed that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of their relationship erased from her brain via an experimental procedure performed by Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Not to be outdone, Joel decides to have the same procedure done to himself. As Mierzwiak's bumbling underlings Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood) perform the operation on Joel -- over the course of an evening, in his apartment -- Joel struggles in his own mind to save the memories of Clementine from being deleted. Kirsten Dunst, David Cross, and Jane Adams also star. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

A surreal and challenging romantic fantasy that only seems to improve on itself with repeat viewings, Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind arrives on DVD with some fascinating and revealing extras courtesy of Universal. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image sports a mild grain with vibrant colors and little evidence of digital artifacting or edge enhancement. The closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix is clean and even, and the disc also offers additional English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes with optional French and Spanish subtitles. For those looking to unlock the many mysteries of the elliptical film, an audio commentary track with director Gondry and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman begins slowly but soon finds the creative pair following the film from first pitch to final frame. It's nice to hear Gondry discuss some of the impressive camera tricks he utilizes in the film, and it's obvious that he and Kaufman really connect creatively. A conversation with Jim Carrey and Gondry finds the pair working very harmoniously as well -- with the possible exception of one heated but ultimately benign exchange on set -- and it's great to hear the two discuss the believable backgrounds that they infused the characters with as well as their constant stride to create an original and creative feature. Even if the featurette entitled "A Look Inside Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is little more than an extended commercial, it does offer some fun and revealing interviews with the cast and crew and truly gets the viewer excited to take another look at the decidedly complex film. While a handful of deleted scenes doesn't necessarily reveal anything new about the film, the scenes do provide a few quiet and hauntingly affecting moments that didn't make it into the final cut; fans of the film will no doubt be excited to have the opportunity to check them out. A semi-creepy Polyphonic Spree music video features footage from the film altered to have characters and inanimate objects from the film singing their tune "Light and Day," and a brief infomercial for Lacuna Inc. rounds out the features in a quirky and upbeat note. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

I requested this movie knowing full well how much I loved it. The request was to replace a copy that I had loaned (and now just given) to a friend from my past. Eternal Sunshine is such an important movie to me that I wish I could give all my friends a copy. If nothing else than to give them a small look into who I am; more so with the hope of giving them new perspective on their own selves. Loves/lives. The acting is brilliant. The music is brilliant. It has everything I need to feel like I lived what the characters lived. Meaningless comraderie. Profound substantive mingling of hearts. Philosophical inquiry. And top it all off with love. I know I didn't really just say anything about the movie. If you know nothing about it except what I just said, please do yourself a favor and read nothing more. There is nothing more beautiful than to start a movie like this with no more preconceived notions.

I cannot recommend this film enough.

Talk about a talented filmmaker, video director Michel Gondry and avant-garde writer Charlie Kaufman ("Being John Malkovich", "Adaptation") presents us a great love story of science-fiction proportions. A mixture of Philip K. Dick and modern-day romantic relationship ups and downs.

In a nutshell, the film surrounds the very quiet and docile Joel (Jim Carrey) and very nutty and eccentric Clementine (Kate Winslet) who meet and instantly get involved in a romantic relationship. However, after a year and a recent breakup, Joel seeks her out and it seems that Clementine has no idea who Joel is anymore, as if he was a stranger.

In a quick investigation, Joel realizes that he has been erased from Clementine's memory, in a facility called Lacuna, that specializes in scientifically altering the brain in wiping out certain people and the events that transpond with them. So, Joel decides to do the same.

However, during the process of elimination, Joel mentally tries to save his memories of Clementine, realizing that he wants to save those memories, and at the same time hears the techs rambling during the erasing process in his home; confusing the two matters. In the meantime, one of Lacuna's technicians falls for Clementine and totally screws up the process...it's hard to explain in words especially without spoiling, so you simply NEED TO WATCH IT.

All in all, the film is brilliant, hands down. Originality at its finest. Michel Gondry is a fantastic director, bringing Kaufman's brilliant script to the screen. We have seen Carrey handle a serious film before, and in this turn, shows us a completely different side of Jim Carrey. Kate Winslet is always great and is amazing as Clem, and great support from Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood and Tom Wilkinson just fill up the greatness.

Remarkably edited and well put together...genius sci-fi!
