DVD Synopsis

Although mako sharks are among the fastest and deadliest predators in the ocean, they're not as smart as humans -- at least, they weren't. However, Dr. Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows) has been using mako sharks as her test subjects for research on the regeneration of human brain tissues. McAlester has altered the DNA of several sharks, raising them close to the level of human intelligence; the sharks have also become faster and stronger in the process. While these DNA experiments have yielded fascinating results, they're also of questionable ethics and legality, earning her the distrust of several members of her crew, including shark authority Carter Blake (Thomas Jane and cook "Preacher" Dudley (LL Cool J). The financial backers of these experiments have also expressed skepticism, so when McAlester is ready to perform some major tests, financier Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) arrives for the occasion. McAlester and her team are delicately extracting brain tissue from one of the altered makos when the animal regains consciousness - and becomes very angry. The shark not only attacks the researchers but also damages the floating lab, leaving the crew aboard a literally sinking ship, with the makos eager to go a few rounds - in an arena that favors sharks. Deep Blue Sea was directed by Renny Harlin, and filmed in Mexico at Fox Studios Baja in the underwater filming facilities created for James Cameron's Titanic. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The DVD extras on the shark thriller Deep Blue Sea contain bountiful "making of" information. "When Sharks Attack!" is a documentary highlighting the blend of real sharks, models, and computer effects that were used in the film. While far from comprehensive, seeing the actors swimming with real sharks is engaging. An explanation of the use of music within the film is also interesting. "The Sharks of the Deep Blue Sea" is a short documentary more specifically aimed towards the technology used for the models of the sharks. There is overlap between the two documentaries. Deleted scenes can be viewed with commentary by director Renny Harlin, who explains why each scene was left out. The film as a whole can also be watched with the commentary of the director and one of the film's stars, Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson's commentary adds interest and amusement but unfortunately is only featured in the first half of the track. A theatrical trailer and production stills are provided. The =Deep Blue Sea package also has DVD-ROM features, including screensaver, poster, chat room links, interview clips with cast and production crew, and web links to other shark sites that can all be accessed from the original website. ~ Hannah Court, All Movie Guide

I really liked this movie it wasn't quite like the usual out of control way to big, to smart wildlife movies that barely make a B rating. I think anyone messing with genetics with creatures that out of control would reek havoc on the Earth. Should watch this movie and consider adding a small incindiary devie to blow the critter up from inside if it should choose to attack you.

I am hard pressed to choose between this and JAWS as my top shark movie. There are one or two dorky looking CGI bits, but we expect those, don't we? Otherwise, I just love everything about this movie. A must watch movie!
