DVD Synopsis

Two wacky guys find both romance and fortune in the hamburger business in this comedy. Augie (Clark Brandon) and Drew (Randal Patrick) are a pair of longtime students at Hopkins University who've been making a living by pulling one semi-legal scam after another for years, but one day the dean (J. Don Ferguson) decides he's had enough of their antics and gets rid of them the best way he knows how -- he graduates them. Forced into the real world, the guys are looking for something resembling a career when Augie gets surprising news. His cousin Samantha (Tracy Griffith) runs a gas station where he works part time, but she's considering selling the place to Wrangler Bob Bundy (Jim Varney), the owner of a local burger chain who is convinced the gas station would be the perfect location for a new franchise. Drew figures if the place would be the right spot for a burger joint, they should open one themselves, and eventually Augie and Drew persuade Samantha to go along with the idea. The business gets off to a slow start, but things pick up when Drew's buddy Calvin (Lanny Horn) cooks up a special sauce for the burgers which has aphrodisiacal side effects. Wrangler Bob isn't about to give up without a fight, though, and hires corporate spy Dixie Love (Traci Lords) to get the inside scoop on the burger stand's sudden popularity. Fast Food also stars Kevin McCarthy, Michael J. Pollard, and Pamela Springsteen (Bruce's younger sister). ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Michael A. Simpson's moronic but oddly prudish T&A comedy gets off to a terrible start and only gets worse from there. Tracy Griffith (half-sister to Melanie) stars as Samantha, a pretty redhead who runs a gas station. Her friend Auggie (co-writer Clark Brandon, who later used Griffith in his stultifying eco-kill horror movie Skeeter) and his pal Drew (Randal Patrick) were thrown out of college for a money-making scam, and their ingenuity comes in handy when greedy fast food mogul Wrangler Bob (Jim Varney in a rare non-Ernest role) attempts to take over the station and turn it into a hamburger joint. From there on in, the film is another dumb "let's save the ____" comedy, with smarmy gags like an aphrodisiac secret sauce and the obligatory wet t-shirts to keep viewers awake. Unfortunately, this PG-13 snoozer never really understands or exploits the two elements which make these films successful in the first place: raunch and bare breasts -- neither of which get enough screen time. It's overly tame and attempts to meld the disparate elements of kiddie-comedy innocence and drive-in bawdiness, but fails on both counts. By attempting to capture the best of both worlds, the filmmakers have ended up with a cipher unlikely to satisfy anyone. It's particularly annoying since Simpson knows how to make good raunchy trash. His Sleepaway Camp 3 (also featuring Pamela Springsteen and Michael J. Pollard from this film) was one of the rare truly enjoyable horror sequels, and certainly displayed none of the self-defeating timidity shown here. At least the cast, which also includes Kevin McCarthy, Traci Lords, and Bruce Evers (as Agent Dikworth), is fun to watch. The story certainly isn't. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide
