The Columbia TriStar DVD of
Sidney Lanfield's
You'll Never Get Rich is a significant improvement over the laserdisc release and any prior home video incarnation. Those previous video releases were all made from source prints that had significant flaws, including serious print scratches and generally soft detail -- not so this DVD, which offers sharp, crystaline textures and a clean full-screen (1.33-to-one) image throughout. The soundtrack has also been improved dramatically; on the laserdisc issue, it was noisy and even distorted at times, if this reviewer remembers correctly -- here it's sharp and clear, though the volume level is still set very low, but it pumps up nicely and cleanly. The
Cole Porter score isn't one of his stronger works, but the choreography by
Robert Alton keeps things moving in the musical segments, and the comedy takes care of the rest, in between some startlingly beautiful images of
Rita Hayworth. And she and
Fred Astaire do make a charming screen couple, if not the most dynamic pairing that Astaire was ever part of. The 28 chapters are more than generous for the 99 minute movie, but there are no bonus features of any kind. The DVD opens automatically to a simple two-layer menu. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide
